What Does the Bible Say about Women Preachers?

Does the Bible Permit a Woman to Preach?

John F. MacArthur

Today I want to address a very important issue that has been stirred up on the Internet with me kind of in the middle of it. I do not like to give short answers. I don’t like to get put into position to do that, because I feel like that just escalates confusion. So I want to take the opportunity to address the issue of women preachers this morning and to give you a more thorough answer from the Word of God on this very, very important subject. And I think by the time we are finished, you will understand what the Word of God has to say and how consistently it says it.

Can Women be Pastors but Not Elders?

Denny Burk, PhD

Can women be pastors? Obviously, egalitarians have long contended that they can. However, there is a “complementarian” case for women serving as pastors? The argument goes like this: Yes, it is true that the office of elder is reserved for men as qualified by Scripture. But rightly understood, pastor is not an office in the New Testament but a gift. Since the Holy Spirit gifts both men and women for service and since one of the gifts is pastoring, we should expect to see women serving as pastors. Again, serving as pastor is different from serving in the office of elder. While all elders will have the gift of pastoring not all who have the gift of pastoring will be elders. But is this argument valid?

What Does the Bible Say about Women Pastors?

Got Questions

There is perhaps no more hotly debated issue in the church today than that of women serving as pastors. As a result, it is important to not see this issue as men versus women. There are women who believe women should not serve as pastors and that the Bible places restrictions on the ministry of women, and there are men who believe women can serve as pastors and that there are no restrictions on women in ministry.

This is not a matter of chauvinism or discrimination. It is an issue of biblical interpretation.

Does Gender Equality Equate Us?

Dan Crabtree, MDiv

PART 1: For every theological movement, there are scholars who continue to defend it, and the doctrine of egalitarianism is no exception. This year, Philip Payne published a condensed version of his exegetical defense for egalitarian doctrine which he entitled The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood. Guns drawn, Payne takes aim at complementarianism as he wades through significant battleground texts in the debate over God’s intended design for men and women in the home, in the church, and in the world. But shot after shot, Payne misses the target and instead exposes the flimsy foundation on which egalitarian doctrine has always been built.

Are Husbands Heads or Tails?

Dan Crabtree, MDiv

PART 2: In The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood: How God’s Word Consistently Affirms Gender Equality, Philip Payne demonstrates that egalitarianism is driven by a social agenda, not the Bible. The historical novelty of egalitarian doctrine should alone give us pause, to be sure. But when the movement’s leading scholars are more flexible with the words of Scripture than a game of Twister, it becomes clear which commitment is the cart and which is the horse.

Do Denominational Confessions Compromise Local Church Autonomy? (What about Women Pastors?)

Tom Nettles, PhD

The Southern Baptist Convention is an associational structure of churches.  … The assumption behind the union was that each participating church would be a “regular Baptist church.” No Baptist church is forced to join an association of churches nor forced to stay. No association may exert authority over the internal affairs of a local church, but it may determine the terms of membership in the association. The church is autonomous; the association is autonomous.
