Over the last several months evangelical Christians have been forced to think about Marxist concepts that, heretofore, were foreign to them. Due in large part to the infamous “Resolution 9” that was adopted by the 2019 SBC, language identifying those concepts, if not the proper understanding of them, has become somewhat familiar to evangelicals.

Perhaps the most talked-about action of the Southern Baptist Convention 2019 took place during the report by the Committee on Resolutions. Thirteen resolutions made it out of committee this year. None. however, garnered as much attention as Resolution 9 “On Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality,” which was ill-advised from the start.

At the 2019 Southern Baptist Convention, in a rushed session near its close, the Convention adopted Resolution 9, On Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality. The presentation from the resolutions committee substantially altered the resolution as originally presented. Changing it from a heavy warning against CRT, the committee’s alterations gave it an overall positive commendation. An attempt to amend the resolution.

Throughout Resolution 9, assurances are given that CRT and intersectionality should not take precedence over Scripture. Doubtless these are sincere caveats, but too confident of the possibility of isolating the “tool” from the theoretical commitments and worldview of those who developed it.
