The Changing World
of Seventh-day Adventism

These articles are designed specifically for the Serious Research Student of the history of Adventism and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Most have been authored by scholars who are part of the Progressive Adventists or Evangelical Adventists. Hence, they generally reject Ellen G. White and the early teachings of the SDA Church and are striving for change within the SDA Church. Most of these documents are posted on serious academic websites.

1844: Pillar of Faith or Mortal Wound?

Similarly to the proto-Adventists of New England on that cold, gloomy day 171 years ago, those modern-day Adventists that actually remember the events of that day are too filled with

1844 and the Limits of Biblical Hermeneutics

Every year on October 22 , Adventists recall the events of 1844, the year when thousands of North American Millerites expected that the sanctuary of Daniel 8:14 pointed to the “cleansing” of earth by the return of Christ.

1844 and the Future of Adventism

In these articles, I usually delve briefly into the nuts and bolts of the arguments used to bolster 1844 and then offer a brief reflection. This year, we’ll revisit arguments on Daniel 8 that I discussed in a debate with Clifford Goldstein on Adventist Today.

The Adventist Problem with Revelation

As the late blogger and Spectrum commentator extraordinaire Aage Rendalen once quipped: “There is simply no Adventist sheol left into whose darkness serious scholars can be thrown.”
